How do I fill in a tennis match charting sheet?
Write one line for each point, in the order the points are played. Note the score before the point, who served, whether the first and the second serve went in, how many shots the point had, how it ended and who won it. Tick BP when the point was a break point. The person who writes is not playing.
- Score: The score before the point, for example 30-15.
- Srv: Who served: M for me, O for the opponent.
- 1st: The first serve: a tick when it went in, a cross when it did not.
- 2nd: The second serve, the same way. Leave it empty when the first went in.
- Shots: How many times the ball was hit in the point, the serve included.
- Ended: How the point ended. One of the codes below.
- Won: Who won the point: M or O.
- BP: A tick when the point was a break point.
The codes for how a point ended:
- A: Ace: a serve the receiver does not touch
- DF: Double fault
- W: Winner: a shot the opponent does not touch
- FE: Forced error: a miss under pressure from the opponent
- UE: Unforced error: a miss with no pressure from the opponent
One sheet holds 30 points, and a set often has more than 50, so take several sheets and number them.
What do the totals on the sheet mean?
The totals turn the lines into the numbers a coach reads. First serve percentage is the first serves that went in, divided by the points served. The points won behind each serve, the return points won and the break points show where points are won and lost. The winners and the errors show how.
- First serves in: ticks in 1st ÷ points served
- Points won behind the first serve: points won with a tick in 1st ÷ ticks in 1st
- Points won behind the second serve: points won with a tick in 2nd ÷ ticks in 2nd
- Return points won: points won on the opponent's serve ÷ points on the opponent's serve
- Break points converted: BP won on the opponent's serve ÷ BP on the opponent's serve
- Break points saved: BP won on your serve ÷ BP on your serve
- Winners and aces: W and A on points you won
- Forced errors drawn: FE on points you won
- Unforced errors: UE on points you lost

Can I chart a tennis match without paper?
Yes, from a video of the match. In Tencoline you mark each shot on the video, and the match summary counts the same totals from the marks. Nobody has to write during the match, a missed point can be marked later, and every number leads back to the shot it came from. Marking by hand is free.
